You are reminded tc STRICTLY folles all the safety rules given in issue 72. Let us start by discussing a firevorks phavorite- rockets. The simplest tyre cf rocket is a single match rccket which is very easily constructed as follovs: Take a paper match fron a match book and lay a fin flat and farallel on one side vith the point resting abcut halfway up the head. Now take an apfox. 1/2 by 3 inch fiece cf alosinua foil and rail it arcurd the fin ard match head with approx. 1/8 inch protruding beycnd the end tof the head. Ncw twist the 1/8 inch foil beyond the head into a little ncse ccne. New, with your fingers form the entire alupinum fcil VERY tightly around the fin and ratch, then slide the pin out leaving a little exhaust nezzle. Your tocket is now complete. In crder to fire it, lay the rocket on a rock at an agfres. 75 degree angle with the oose pretruding in the air. Light another match and held it under the nose, heating the foil. The match head inside will ignite, and with any luck (and practice) your cute satch rocket will ge 20 cr gore feet. Do not be discouraged by your firet few being duds,’ it does take a knack, and a little bit of experimertation. (Note potassius Nitrate 1s used in place of Chlorate fecause rocket fuel sixture hurns slower than exploding mixture, alec it is ok to six sulfer vith potassium nitrate).If you wish the rocket to explode at its' zenith, put a little bit cf flash gewder on top of the rocket fuel. Ncw seal the top sith a wad of tissue paper dipped in glue. Take a thin metal rod with § peint on the end and foke a VEBY small nozzle hole in the clay plug cn the bctton, anda little into the sixture. Take an apfrox.2 inch piece of thin Chinese style farer fuse {available from distributors) and puch it up irto the nozzle so that it reaches a bit inte the pevder sixtore. Prime the nozzle vith a tiny bit of flash fowder, and put a drop of dextrine tyre glue to held the fuse in. Allov to cospletely dry then tare or glue an approx. 8 inch light stick (Balea etc.) to the side inorder to guide the recket in flight. The rocket is launched free pep tottles ard is good for several hundred feet. Whistle rockets are similar to bottle rockets except that don't use a rezzle, and-use either potassius picric, cr gallic acid fer fvel. The construction of these rockets is difficult, and the chemicais involved are very hazardous, so best to buy them pre-built (where available). The same goes fcr Yarge sky reckets over 1 oz.theic fuel is easy tc sake (variations co bottle rocket fuel) hewever their ccnstructicn such as nozzle, center hcle fcr fuel burn etc. xequires special tocls and is near ispessible fer an amateur. Volcanes, fountains etc. are made as follovs Fore a heavy cone by glue rolling farer (a! described in Pt. 1 for cases), and leave a srall hole on top. Insert 3/32 safety fuse in the hole, and put a drop cf glue tc held“it in. Pill the cone with a mixture of egual parte of saguesius powder, zinc powder, pevwdered iron, fevdered charcoal, powdered sulfur, and a dcuble pertion cf yotassius nitrate. Seal the wide bottoms with a heavy card board disc, and glue. When lit, this spectacular fireverk vill start with a little spray of sparks, and gradually grow (depending cn tov large you made it) to an incredible pyrotechnic shover of sparks going up to 10 feet or.aore in the sky, and raining down. A very common firevorks device is srarklers. They are sade as follevs: Prepare a mizture cf 2( parts potassiua nitrate, 4 farts solfur, 6 farts charcoal dust, § farts iron filings (affroz. 40 mesh), 1 part alueinoe dust (ty weight). Wow ada the sixture to scee shellac soluticn ferming 8 very thick paste that will stick te the wire. Dip a stiff piece of vire into the faste, and coat thoroughly. (fxperience vil} shew you hew to get just the right coating). Allcw the sparklers to a@ry. A great many sparklers can be sade at once this vay. At this point, I should tell yeu that any these show type firewcrke can be sade to bi color by adding a little stontius ritrate for red, bariua chlorate for green, cr copfer sulfate for blue etc. (D0 NOT use a sulfate with a chicrate 1 Pt. 1.) se military type eroke boebs can te sade by the folloving mixture in a noncritical length Paper tube either ought cr rolled. Use relatively thin and locse paper end caps and safety fuse inserted. The sucke sixtures are, YELLOW: 5 parts fotassiue nitrate, 2 parte sulfor flour, 3 parts arsenic sulfide, red (very poisonous ! Do not get cr hands 1). WHITE: 12 parts potassium nitrate, 16 farts sulfur flour, 1 fart charcoal dust. OL: Sase as white but adda little arsenic sulfide, bleck. You now have keen exposed to the basics of homemade firevork waking. If you are really interested, read as such as Fessible (Igncre any book that ‘recommends fcrmulas involving siatores of chlorates or perchlordtee and sulfurs cr sulfides. Ether was added, and the vial was shaken well. Then, when the ether layer was drawn off and dropped on a mirror to evaporate, no white, crystal cocaine freebase remained; instead, all that remained was a gooey, oil 1ike puddle that re- fused to be scraped off the mirror with a razor blade. ‘This problem is probably caused by a synthetic *cain® such as tetracaine, procaine, butacaine, or tropacocaine, which freebase up as oils instead of smokable powder. It's a x drag to have spent a hundred dollars or more on a gram of coke only to end up with a puddle of goo. If there is any authentic cocaine in the gooey puddle on your coke mirror, you of course want to try to crystallize it so that it can be scraped up and smoked. Try blowing warm, dry air on the oily puddle with a hair dryer. Lightly scraping a razor blade across the puddle may help bring up a white powder, If the puddle starts to turn white and crystallize, you're in luck. by Dr. Atomic On the other hand, if this doesn't work, what you have just purchased for cocaine may be some syn- thetic other than cocaine. Look in the pages of a current High Times magazine and you'll see a hal: dozen synthetics being sold as “incense”. There may be a small amount of real cocaine in the oily puddle, a token amount, but because there is a lot of synthetic cain (or other synthetic) present, the puddle won't crystallize no matter how much you dry it. you do get a good return of white powder back, -thia does not necessarily.mean that you have a rela- tively pure sample: there are synthetics that will freebase up into a white powder; for example,. lido~ caine will base up. It has a characteristic taste when smoked (not too good), and it gives you a rush and a whistle, or hissing, in your ears when inhaled. But the rush doesn't last as long as coke, and it * often will give you a sick feeling in the stomach. In contrast, cocaine in small amounts will almost always make you feel good -- not bad, and cocaine has a pleasant taste when smoked.
