TAP No. 82 - Still in Saigon One of TAP’s more extreme and dated columns, written in a deliberately provocative voice referencing armed guerrilla groups and citing a Barry Goldwater quote approvingly of political extremism. The piece touches on modifying commercial paging equipment for remote triggering applications and points readers to publicly available (since-declassified, and in one case since-withdrawn) U.S. government documents on chemical and nuclear weapons history, without providing original technical instruction itself. It closes with a list of mail-order suppliers of novelty items and privacy/remailing services. The content reflects the more extreme fringe of TAP’s later-era editorial voice and is presented here strictly as a historical record of the publication rather than as instructional material.
Still in Saigonby Ox ¥,. MandiasThis month's column is dedicated to the French under-ground guerrilla force Direct Action, hoisting the blackbanners of May aloft once again, end to the ArwenianJustice Commandoes dispensing revolutionary justice toTurk pige from L.A. to Ottawa to Ankara, "Extremism inthe defense of liberty is no vice," --Barry GoldwaterBringing the War Home: ‘Interesting, your Earth peoplepractised 40 centuries of org-anized wiolence, yet imprison those who employ it privately"| commented Mr. Spock dryly. And so we begin this month'slesson in advance assassination for spooks & malcontents,“Novel Uses for Paging Systema." These systems typicallyconsist of a single freq, RF transmitter with touch-toneencoding device which can separately set off a number of“beepers, each beeper being triggered by a separatetouch-tone kay combination. OPENING A ABNTED MALL ADDRESS vy Dr. AtomicPrivate and secure mail addresses can be rentedfrom Telephone Answering Services (TAS's). Lookin the ada in the Yellow Pages under “AnsweringServices”, "Telephone Answering”, Oc "Mail Recativ-ing". ff none of the TAS's advertises mail receiv=-ing services, call a few and ask if they'll takeyour mail. Most of them wiil.Sommm TAS'ms will tall you Chat they only offermail receiving services to their customers thatpay for tel anawering service. The tele-phone answering is usually expensive, around §50amonth, and you may not need it or want it. ‘So,tell them that you are a new business and may wentthair telephons anewering services in the future, but for now all you need is a place to receive themail. .If you're located near or in 2 Matropolitan area,it paya to shop around for the best service becausethere are probably many to choose from, On theother hand, in rural areas you'ra lucky even tofind one TAS, sc you may have to take what you canget. mail receiving fees run from as iow as $5 amonth to as high as 523 a month.Rent your mail address in a business name. Choose& name that is appropriete for the kind of materialyou will have coming in, In addition to the pusi-ness nem, you can list your own name and/or scmealiases. I usually have one rented addrass for myown name and a separate name for each alias. Therule of thumb ig to separates and insulats youridentities.Regardless of -hat name you use, do not give theAnswering Service your home address orf any otheraddress that is linked to you. Give them the ad-dreas of a lacge apartment building: say you're new{n town and are just staying with friends at saidbuilding. Most PAS's will not card you foc ID, bdutit helps to have acms paper to show them in casethey aak. Generally, if they do ask, they will ac-cert any document that you show them.Do not rent a F.C. Box! The Post Office (8 justanother arm of Big Srother, and in addition toDeing in the mail delivery Dusineas, they are apolice agency, Inatead of calling tham tne PoatOffice, we would be more accurate calling them thePoatal Police. Moreover. the P.0. is expensive, nosey, and you can"? hava orders of chemicals sentto a P.O. Box, They wan’t let you call in andcheck if you have mail in, aither.Alec, it ia to your advantage to rent your mailreceiving service from a human vdeing rather thanfrom a policy-statement-following-bureaucrat. Forexample, I used my rented address aa my driver‘slicense address. If an arrest warrant were issuedfor me, tha police would go to the TAS rather thanCG my home. SinceIgat alang goad with theTAspeople, when I called in to chack my mail, theywould tip me off if the cops were looking for me.This ia inexpensive security against being draggedout of bed in the middle of the night by the cops.If you order chemicals to your rented address, out of courtesy for the TAS people do noc ocderbulk chemical shipments, Most TAS's are just smallOffices manned by non-chemists, and they may panicif the Motor Fraight delivery man bringa in acouple of 55 galion drums Of chamicals marked "“Cor-roseive, Flammable, Hazard." The TAS may refuseGalivery, which in turn may cause the polica to be@lerted -- if they aren't on the case already. It ia not generally safe to order even smallquantities o£ drug precurscora to 2 TAS. The DORAwill put surveillance on the building, and you endup playing “Getting The Chemicals And Trying ToLose Thea.” The success rate is, perhaps, 25% USand 75% THEM with this methad,XT have, howewer, had succeas using TAS addressesto obtain small quantities of chemicala guch aslidocaina, fenéasfamine, tropa-cocaine, buracaine, andDMSO. I would order no moce than a couple ofliters of liquids and no more than a xilo of power. In summery, @ TAS address in essential for privacy,Peper tripping, freebies, and for personal security,Don't put off getting a sefe address. Knowledgewithout action is worthless.
