PHREAKS GATHER IN WASHINGTON IN AUGUST
The Washington Area Telecommunications Society (WATS) will hold a
symposium of telecommunications hobbyists (a more flattering term than
“phone phreaks") in Washington DC on Saturday August 9th. The site for
the Washington Area Telecommunications Symposium (WATS-80) will be the
Gramercy Inn at 1616 Rhode Island Ave.
WATS-80 will have lectures on various aspects of accessing
telecommunications networks in creative ways. WATS-80 will be co-
sponsered by TAP, the New York City based newsletter of the phone
Phreak communitty. A Featured speaker at WATS-80 will be Cheshire
Catalyst of TAP, Cheshire has, through as loophole of the commercial
teletype networks, access to the world telex network from almost any
telephone, and an acousticly coupled computer terminal.
Chairman of WATS-80 is Aubrey Phillipz. Mr Phillipz' psudeonym is
derived from an obscure science-fiction novel. Mr Phillipz will speak
on the subject of computer related activities.
Tom Edison, editor and publisher of the TAP newsletter will be on
hand selling back issues of TAP, TAP T-shirts, and cloth patches. The
Patches show the Bell System logo with a crack in the bell, and reads
"Ma Bell is a cheap Mother®.
Other TAP staff members wiil also be on hand for consultation on
various subjects. Computer Wizard, No. 6, and The Librarian will be
available for discussion. Computer Wizard will be discussing plans for
a scrambled subscription Tv decoder which is expected to be published
in TAP in the next few months.
Besides the lectures by craftsman in the telecommunicaticns
access field, Beil System films will be shown, These films are
available to the public for showing to most any civic group at no
cost.
The conference will begin at lOAMEDT with registration opening at.
QAMEDT. Registration by ‘mail will cost $5.00, and $6.00 at the door.
Mailed in registrations will be held at the door for the registrant.
It is hoped the registrant will use an interesting psudeonym to hold
his badge under. If all his friends register as "Bilbo from under the
rock in Albequerque", the system breaks dowh a bit. A “supporting
registration", priced at $3.00, is available for those people who
cannot make it across country for the conference. Supporting regis-
trants will recieve copies of all literature made available for
passing out to attendees. The press is invited to write ahead for free
pre-registration.
