TAP Classified No. C7 - Editor's Financial Appeal

Editor Tom Edison’s candid, exasperated appeal to readers about TAP’s finances — rising printing and postage costs, a new computerized mailing system that wasn’t cheap, and lagging sales of TAP merchandise — capped with a threat to dock issues from subscribers who don’t buy something. The usual classified listings and subscription price list round out the sheet.

Tom’s $1 solution to:
a $1 million problem
PLEASE!!
!PLEASE!IIPLEASEII! Read this entice
article!!!
TAP is in VERY big financial trouble
and it's all YOUR fauitil! When I took over the
job of Editor-in-Chief of TAP in 1975 I inherited
a sinking ship. Tt has been an up hill struggle
all the way with the last two years being the
worst. The largest problem was the lack of a
computer system to keep track of subscriptions and
to print out mailing labels. Over the last two
yeacs, in drips and drabs, TAP finally acquired a
complete computer system and a printer. All very
nice but unfortunately all VERY expensive
I don't have to tell you about inflation. It
affects everybody including us. Every time I go to
our printer it costs more to have TAP printed.
And I don't think that I have to
say anything
about the recent outragious Postal Monopoly rate
increases. Postage has and will continue to be our
qreatest expense.
To help keep these and our other operating
costs down and to keep from raising our
subscription cates which I point out have NOT
cisen in four(!) years, I have offered
piece of TAP merchandise
each year. Th
included T-shirts, buttons, patches, tapes,
mugs,
and lastly, pens. This merchandise was sold not
with the expectation of making a fortune but with
the hope that most of our readers would realize
that by buying some of these
items they are
helping TAP to stay alive! I am very sorty to
report that most of our readers just don't give a
damn! A good case in point is the fact that as of
September 1st, 1981 only seven readers bought TAP
pen
We have to sell 300 just to break even!!!
If every TAP subscriber had bought just one pen,
the resulting profit would have been enough to pay
for both the printing and postage costs of the
next four issues
.
Over the last
five years t have asked, pleaded,
begged, screamed, bitched and complained to you
deac ceaders about doing your share to help TAP.
ALL you had to do was get us a new subscriber and
buy some of the TAP goodies.
You did not. You
“pushed TAP up against the financial wall and there
is no place we can go for help except to you. The
resulting "Catch 22" situation has given me no
tecourse other than to take a drastic step from
the "Godfather" and “make you an offer you can't
refuse". Any TAP subscriber who does not buy a TAP
10th Anniversary Pen between now and January 1st,
1982 will have two (2) issues removed from their
subscciption, No if's, and's or but's!!! And
before you tell me that I can't do that, I'm doing
that!!! Just keep in mind the ugly alternative:
the two issues of TAP that you have in your hot

‘iasti’Remember that the biggest mistake you can
make is to be apathetic and “Let the other guy do
it". This has to be an all out effort by all
of
our subsccibers if TAP is to survive!
My apologies to all our readers for not having
the issues ready by September lst as promised. I
would Like to blame our printer or our computer
but the truth of the matter is that I was away on
a long needed vacation down at Virginia Beach the
last few weeks in August and just didn't have time
to lay out the issues until ft got back in
September. Again my apologies.
TAP mugs are sold out. Please do NOT order them
anymore. We have two red medium, two red extra
large and three black extra large TAP T-shirts
left in stock. Someone PLEASE buy them!!!
TAP is still looking for new writers. Tf you
have something of interest to suy, type it up
using a five inch type column width and send it to
me C/O TAP. All submitted work becomes the
property of TAP and cannot be returned.
